ONTARIO SECTIONS NEWS
1. Orangeville Basic Amateur Course
Dufferin County ARES will hold a Basic Amateur Radio course starting
Thursday September 11 at 7:00pm, and running for ten weeks. The
course will be held at the Edelbrock Center on 30 Center Street in
Orangeville. There is no cost to this course but you need to have the
Canadian Amateur Radio Basic Qualification Study Guide, 8th Edition.

1. Simulated Emergency Test
The date for the 2014 Simulated Emergency Test (SET) has been
confirmed as Saturday October 4th.

2. Bob Eldridge, SK
VE7BS, Bob Eldridge, has become a Silent Key. He passed away July
15th at Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, B.C. after a short
stay. He was 93.
Bob was a member of the DX and Topband community, and a regular
columnist for the Canadian Amateur Magazine. A tribute article in TCA

1. 2014 RAC AGM Concluded

The RAC Annual General Meeting took place on July 27th in New
Westminster BC. The proceedings can be heard through the archived

the venue available.

1. IARU Region 2 Meeting

The annual Executive Committee meeting of IARU Region 2 was held in
Hartford, Connecticut, USA, last July 15 and 16, immediately
preceding the ARRL's National Centennial Convention. Annual reports,
future plans, and the situation of each Member Society and amateur
radio in general were discussed.

1. RAC Scholarships deadline approaching

Earlier this year, RAC announced the availability of scholarships to
young Amateurs who are taking post-secondary schooling in Electrical,
Electronic and Software Engineering. Students in other fields of
study will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You must be a
licensed Amateur and we remind everyone that the deadline for
applications is July 31, 2014.

1. Ontario South SEC Appointed

Effective 9 July, Scott Carter, VE3CGN has been re-appointed as
ARES Section Emergency Coordinator for Ontario South Section, for a
two-year term. Scott was previously SEC for Ontario South until
health issues prompted him to step down. Scott now advises that his
health issues are under control, and he is keen to resume as SEC.

1. RAC Head Office Phone System problems

Please note that the VoIP telephone system at the RAC office is
currently experiencing problems. Callers are still able to leave
messages and we encourage this. The problem is being investigated
and we hope to have it repaired in a timely fashion.

1. Look for VE3RCMP during Field Day

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police amateur radio Group in Ottawa will
be operating a Special Event Station VE3RCMP during the Field Day
contest weekend, June 28-29. They plan also to activate the call
sign during the RAC Canada Day Contest July 1st.

The Special Event commemorates the 75th anniversary of the first RCMP
owned and operated radio-to-patrol-car dispatch system that was
commissioned in the fall of 1939. VE3RCMP during Field Day will be

Stations in Canada send RST and province or territory; VE0s and stations outside Canada send RST and a serial number. Logs must be received by July 31.
