NATIONAL NEWS
1. A New Public Information Officer
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Jim Sutton, VE4SIG, has
successfully completed the ARRL Public Relations course and may be
the first Canadian to do so. The new field organization structure
recognizes the need for such officers in each region, to raise the
profile of Amateur Radio.
Any ARRL member can take the course, for free, by downloading it
from their website.

ONTARIO SECTION NEWS
2. Killarney ARES Activities
The Manitoulin Amateur Radio Club operated four stations for the full
duration of this year's Field Day exercise. Thanks to those amateurs
who visited, and those who helped.
Twenty-two hams from Sudbury ARES and the Sudbury Amateur Radio Club
took part in Field Day 2011 held at the EOC in Azilda, Ontario.
Emergency Coordinator Alan, VA3AJV was interviewed on CBC Radio
Morning North. We also had media coverage from Easy Rock 103.5 FM
and Northern Life newspaper. Thanks to all who participated!

ITEMS OF INTEREST
3. Hurricane Watch Net Seeks New Members
The Hurricane Watch Net is looking for hams "who have above-average
stations, are capable of effectively conducting HF net operations,
and are willing to commit their time" during HWN activations.
Volunteers must be able to effectively communicate with Central
America, the Caribbean, Mexico and South Texas on the 20 meter
band. They particularly desire hams who are fluent in both Spanish
and English. If you can help, please visit www.hwn.org for more

4. Special Event Stations
From July 26 to August 2, special event station VX1D will commemorate
the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of the Cape Sable
Lighthouse in Shelburne County, NS. QSL via VE1FA.
From August 1 to August 31, special event station VX2O will
commemorate the Centennial of Parks Canada at the Mingan Archipelago
National Park Reserve of Canada. QSL via VE2XO.

5. ALE HFN Reaches 4 Continuous Years
The Global Automatic Link Establishment High Frequency Network has
set a new up-time record by operating continuously on all
international amateur bands 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for 4
years straight.
Relying on HF ionospheric communications, radio stations in this
worldwide system scan the ham bands every 10 seconds, maintaining
contact through short digital bursts using a system known as ALE
(Automatic Link Establishment). With about 2000 registered operators,
the HFN covers a vast area of the planet. For more information visit
