NATIONAL NEWS

1. RAC Scholarships Granted

Radio Amateurs of Canada is pleased to announce the granting of three
$500 academic scholarships, to Ms. Paulyn Mulles, VE3PJM at Carlton
University, Mr. Jason Deglint, VE7TJD at University of Victoria, and
Mr. Liam Bindle, VE5LRB at the University of Saskatchewan.

RAC has also awarded a $500 community grant to Shaftesbury High
School in Winnipeg, to assist them to become the only permanent
Amateur Radio ARISS Telebridge Station in Canada under the guidance
of Mr. Robert Striemer, VE4SHS.

RAC would like to thank all the Amateurs from across Canada who have
generously contributed to this fund. If you want to contribute,

2. OQ4CLM Special Event

From October 16th through November 25th, special event station OQ4CLM
will commemorate the Canadian Liberation March, a 33km march by
Canadian troops coming from the town Hoofdplaat in Holland to
liberate the town Knokke in 1944.

This is the 32nd year for this special event, which in previous years
used different call signs. For more information visit www.oq4clm.be

3. Nominations Open for Hamvention Awards

The Dayton Hamvention is soliciting nominations for its 2014 awards
for Amateur of the Year, Special Achievement, Technical Excellence,
and Club of the Year. All Amateur Radio operators are eligible.
Nominations must be received by January 17, 2014. Winners will be
recognized at the 2014 Dayton Hamvention. For more information and a

4. ARRL Centennial QSO Party

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ARRL, the ARRL Centennial
QSO Party will start on January 1 and run for the entire year 2014.
Participants can accumulate points and win awards. The event is open
to all, although only ARRL members and appointees, elected officials,
HQ staff and W1AW are worth points. During 2014 W1AW will operate
portable from every state (at least twice) and most US territories.

To qualify for points all contacts must be two-way using CW, phone,
or any digital mode, on 160, 80, 40, 30, 17, 15, 12, 10, 6, 2 or 1.25
meters, plus 70 centimeters and satellite. No cross-band or
cross-mode contacts. For more information see

5. Guide to DSP

"The Scientist and Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing," by
Steven W. Smith, Ph.D. is available for free download. The book is
written for students and professionals and is "low math." You can
download each chapter in PDF format, or read it online, at
www.dspguide.com

6. Free PCB Design Software

DesignSpark PCB is a free printed-circuit board layout program for
Windows. DesignSpark Mechanical, just released, allows 3-D mechanical
design. For more information, or to download these free programs,

collection of open source projects contributed by DesignSpark users.
