RAC Ontario Section Bulletin for March 21, 2009

NATIONAL NEWS

1. New BC/YK Regional Director
Bill Gipps, VE7ISV, has been elected as the RAC Director for the
BC/YK Region to complete the remainder of a two-year term that began
January 1, 2009, effective immediately. He was the only nominee.

The RAC president, board and executive welcome Mr. Gipps and thank
him for volunteering his services. RAC also extends thanks to past
directory Ed Frazer, VE7EF, for his years of service on the Board and
for his dedication and commitment to Radio Amateurs of Canada.

1. Global Simulated Emergency Test
The date for the GlobalSET, sponsored by IARU Region 1, has been
altered to coincide with World Amateur Radio Day on April 18th. The
theme for the day of "Amateur Radio: Your Resource in Disaster and
Emergency Communication" is an ideal opportunity to showcase the work
of emergency communications groups around the world.
The timing of the event remains at 1100-1500 UTC but in a change for

1. Special Prefix for Ontario
From April 1 to April 30, all Ontario amateurs are authorized to use
special prefixes, in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Lakehead
Amateur Radio Club.  VA3 amateurs may use VB3, and VE3 amateurs may
use VC3.

special prefixes, in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Opening of

ONTARIO SECTION NEWS
1. Basic Licence Course in Owen Sound
The Georgian Bay Amateur Radio Club will hold a two-day Basic Amateur
Radio License course on April 11 and 25, at the O.S.C.V.I. Secondary
School in Owen Sound.  The course runs 8 am to 4 pm both Saturdays.

1. New RAC President

At the February 24th Radio Amateurs of Canada Board teleconference
meeting, President Dave Goodwin, VE3AAQ/VO1AU, announced that he was
resigning his position effective immediately. Dave indicated he is
unable to devote enough time to RAC affairs because of a recent
increase in personal and professional responsibilities.

Dave became RAC President on Jan 1st, 2008. All attending the

1. New First Vice-President Elected
At the January 27, 2009 teleconference it was announced that the RAC
Board of Directors have elected Ian MacFarquhar, VE9IM, of Saint
John, NB, as First Vice-President of RAC.  Ian will complete the
term ending 31 December 2009.  Ian has previously been First VP.
The Board also appointed Ed Frazer, VE7EF, as interim Regional
Director for British Columbia and Yukon.  This interim appointment

1. Funding Cut Ends International EMCOMM Event Planning
Regrettably the RAC-ARRL Myrtle Beach Special Event, planned for
mid-March 2009 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has been cancelled.
Preparations for the event, which was to be a second demonstration of
cooperation between Canada (RAC) and the United States of America

1. International Year of Astronomy
The official kickoff date for the International Year of Astronomy
(IYA) is January 10th.  On that day many astronomy clubs across
Canada will participate in local astronomical activities, including
displays at Shopping Malls, talks in Public Libraries, and star
parties for the public.
Amateur Radio operators who are affiliated with the Royal
Astronomical Society of Canada are encouraged to visit IRLP node
